After losing someone to suicide, establishing and maintaining healthy boundaries becomes essential to protecting your emotional energy and facilitating healing. You may need to set boundaries around discussing the death, limit time with people who don’t support your grief process, say no to obligations that feel overwhelming, or create distance from those who judge or blame. Learning that it’s okay to prioritize your needs, decline invitations, and protect yourself from insensitive comments or questions isn’t selfish. It’s necessary self-preservation during one of life’s most difficult experiences.
