Overwhelming guilt is one of the most universal experiences among suicide loss survivors who blame themselves for not preventing the death, missing warning signs, saying or not saying certain things, or failing to be enough to keep their loved one alive. This guilt often stems from hindsight bias that makes everything seem obvious looking backward, incomplete information about what your loved one was truly experiencing, and the human need to find someone to blame when tragedy strikes. Understanding the critical difference between feeling guilty and being responsible represents a major step in healing from suicide loss. You may feel guilt, but you are not responsible for their suicide.
